Welcome to the future of poi.

This is one of the best instructional DVDs we've ever seen for any discipline. It uses an intelligent, technical approach to poi and is intended to teach, not merely entertain the viewer. The 3-D graphics are very helpful in describing the various moves and the instruction is clear and to the point.

There are also great tips on practicing and performing, all of which can be transferred to any other art form. If you think that poi isn't challenging enough and not worth your time, this DVD will convince you otherwise. The performance tips bring an air of professionalism to an art form that is often dismissed as flaky or stagnant. Our favorite quote from this section: "Don't use fire as a crutch to draw people in."

The "choose your path" menu feature is great. After each lesson, there's a menu with related moves so you can decide what feels logical for you to learn next. There's also a brief segment about how the DVD works so you don't have to guess.

Suggested skill level: Advanced beginner to expert. You definitely need toms basic instruction to get the concepts taught in this DVD, and paying attention to the terms used in the earlier lessons will help later on as there's a lot of reference made to terms used in the beginning. This helps keep the more advanced lessons focused and, in our opinion, treats the student with respect.
